With Dr. Wolfgang Merz on board, AXO combines expertise, networking, and passion—a perfect trio to drive the transportation transition and prepare rail for the future. As Chief Commercial Officer, Wolfgang brings knowledge from an impressive career: nearly 30 years spent working globally for Deutsche Bahn. But who is the man shaping the digital future of the rail industry with AXO?

Environmental Protection as a Calling: Wolfgang’s Unusual Career Path

Like AXO founder and CEO Oliver von Sperber, Wolfgang’s journey to the rail industry wasn’t direct. He first studied geography, taking his academic pursuits to the US, Canada, and China, charting an international path early on. “As a young scientist, I wanted to use my skills to protect the environment and reduce resource consumption,” he shares. After completing his doctorate, he began as a project manager for environmental impact studies at a mid-sized planning firm. The railway, then one of his clients, quickly recognized his potential—and Wolfgang joined Deutsche Eisenbahn-Consulting GmbH (now DB Engineering & Consulting).

Momentum and Team Spirit: Milestones in Rail

Wolfgang’s career is marked by numerous milestones. At DE-Consult, he contributed to feasibility studies for rail projects focused on environmental protection and vibration control in countries like India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

His memories of the early 2000s, working in DB’s corporate development department, remain vivid: “The spirit of renewal during the early days of the railway reform was incredible. We were a close-knit, motivated young team, united in our mission to modernize, professionalize, and improve the railway system.”

Later, DB Fernverkehr AG sent him to Brussels as Managing Director of Thalys International, preparing the company for competition in the newly liberalized European rail market. Other notable positions, including with DB Netz AG/DB InfraGo, rounded out his career.

But Wolfgang values more than long-term projects; humanity also counts. He’s especially proud of his ability to mentor young talent and guide them into leadership positions. Many of his former colleagues remain close friends to this day.

Why AXO Is the Perfect Fit

So, how does a seasoned rail expert with corporate experience end up at a younger company like AXO? The answer is refreshingly straightforward:
“I met Oliver von Sperber at Railtalks in Berlin. We started chatting over a couple of beers—and it quickly became clear that we share a passion and want to make a difference together.”

For Wolfgang, AXO represents the ideal mix of innovation, pragmatism, and forward-thinking. The rail industry faces immense challenges: outdated infrastructure, staffing shortages, and the need to drive digital transformation. “With AXO, we can create real change here.” As Chief Commercial Officer, Wolfgang focuses on business development, leveraging his extensive system knowledge and international network.

Automation and Innovation: Keys to Rail’s Future

For Wolfgang, the way forward is clear: digitization and automation are the mega-trends in rail infrastructure maintenance. Predictive maintenance solutions, particularly sensor-based systems, will transform the industry.
“The shift toward predictive maintenance is accelerating. With AXO’s sensor technology, we have the right product at the right time.”

Looking back, Wolfgang acknowledges how much time has been lost. Compared to other industries, rail is significantly behind in innovation, compounded by labor shortages, cost pressures, and digital demands. “If investments in digital solutions had been made earlier, the rail system would be in a much better position today. . But there was a lack of funding, willingness, and economic pressure to drive innovation.”

Work-Life Balance and Life Philosophy

Outside of work, Wolfgang’s priorities are clear. “Family first” is his mantra – he treasures close connections with his wife, three adult children, and a large circle of friends. He’s socially engaged with organizations like Old Tablers and Lions International. On top of that, he’s an active sports enthusiast: lunchtime swims and evening runs are part of his daily routine.

His life motto reflects his career: “Do what you’re passionate about, and you’ll not only succeed but also have fun along the way.”

Advice for the Next Generation

Wolfgang sees the rail industry as a sector with immense potential. His advice to young people: “Technology is advancing rapidly, and massive investments are being made. Rail is an environmentally friendly mode of transport that is gaining priority in light of climate change and traffic challenges. Take a close look at Deutsche Bahn, too – there are exciting jobs with purpose, competitive salaries, and flexible working models.
